Murray has practised law since 1976 and been working at Anthony Harper since 1984. His speciality areas are property (primarily commercial and farm property), trust and estate planning, and local government work. Clients choose Murray because of his depth of experience, practical knowledge, and the fact that he has a very real understanding of property and the property market. He is very sharply focused on providing clients with practical solutions that are cost effective, and that will provide long term solutions.

The clients Murray works with are typically corporate entities or family investors who wish to purchase, lease, or subdivide property. Many of his clients want to take a hands on approach to their properties and the ways they are leased and used by owners and tenants.

Murray also acts for a number of farming families primarily in the sheep, beef, and cropping farm areas, as well as a number of local authorities and council controlled trading organisations on the acquisition, disposal, and operation of their properties.

Key Transactions


  • A team and advised a client on the sale of its Canterbury based forestry assets. The transaction involved approximately 30 properties spread across Canterbury, from hill country blocks to the lower plains blocks. The work involved negotiating the terms of the sale, dealing with the legal structure involved in the sale, dealing with the climate response issues, preparing the agreement for sale and purchase, liaising with the shareholders of the vendor client to ensure that all their respective internal requirements were met, completing the settlement of the transaction, and reporting to the vendor and its shareholders. The transaction had a value of approximately $30 million. Its completion was a great success for the client.
Acted for:
  • A family on the acquisition of their farming properties over the last 35 years. The clients were originally stock agents who wanted to purchase a sheep and beef farm. They initially purchased a 50% share of a 600 hectare property and subsequently bought out the balance of the property from the original owner. Some years later they sold that property and bought another property in the same district. Over the next 20 years the clients bought the two adjoining properties until they have now reached the stage where they own three farms which have been merged in to own highly productive unit of approximately 750 hectares. Subsequently, Murray has acted for one of the children of the family on the transfer of the shares in the family farming company so that there has been an intergenerational transfer of the farming business to the next generation.
